Product Intelligence

In the world of structural metals, hardness usually comes at the cost of toughness. Maraging Steel breaks that rule.

Layrr Materials M300 is an 18% Nickel, Cobalt-Molybdenum strengthened steel. Unlike conventional tool steels that rely on carbon for hardness (and become brittle as a result), M300 relies on the precipitation of intermetallic compounds. The result is a material that offers extreme tensile strength (~2000 MPa) while retaining significant fracture toughness. We supply this powder specifically for Additive Manufacturing, where it has become the industry standard for producing injection moulds with conformal cooling channels.

Material Behaviour & Microstructure

The name "Maraging" is a portmanteau of "Martensitic" and "Aging."

The metallurgy is unique and advantageous for processing:

  1. Low Carbon Martensite: In its as-printed state, the alloy is relatively soft and ductile (30-35 HRC), making it easy to machine or post-process

  2. Precipitation Hardening: A simple thermal aging cycle precipitates nano-scale intermetallics (typically Ni3Ti and Ni3Mo) throughout the matrix.

  3. Dimensional Stability: Because there is no carbon quenching involved, the material undergoes negligible dimensional change during hardening, ensuring your final tolerances remain true.

Processing Advantage: The Layrr Standard

M300 is widely regarded as one of the most "printable" metals available.

Our gas-atomized M300 powder is optimized for Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) systems:

  • High Laser Absorptivity: Melts cleanly with excellent layer adhesion.

  • Crack Resistance: The low carbon content significantly reduces thermally induced residual stress cracking during the print process compared to H13 or D2 tool steels.

  • Reusability: High chemical stability allows for efficient sieving and reuse cycles.

Critical Applications

M300 is the engine behind the "Conformal Cooling" revolution:

  • Injection Moulding & Die Casting: Used to print tooling inserts with complex internal cooling channels that reduce cycle times by up to 40%.

  • Aerospace: Rocket motor cases, landing gear components, and centrifuge rotors requiring high strength-to-weight ratios.

  • Motorsport: High-performance driveshafts and transmission gears that must absorb shock loads without shattering.

  • Industrial: High-strength structural parts for centrifuges and pressurized systems.

Layrr Technical Note:

One of the greatest advantages of M300 is the simplicity of its heat treatment. It does not require a complex quench-and-temper. A single-step aging process (typically 6 hours at 490°C) allows the part to reach peak mechanical properties (~54 HRC) with virtually zero distortion.
