Bio-Integration Starts with Powder Integrity.
In the medical device industry, the material is the technology. Whether it is an acetabular cup that must encourage bone ingrowth or a dental bridge that must endure decades of chewing forces, the chemistry of the powder dictates the success of the patient outcome.
LAYRR Materials supplies the certified, biocompatible powders that power the digital health revolution. We partner with ISO 13485 certified manufacturers and dental labs to deliver feedstock that meets the strictest purity standards of ASTM and FDA guidelines.
The Clinical Advantage of AM
Additive Manufacturing (AM) has moved from "experimental" to the "standard of care" for complex implants.
1. Osseointegration (Bone Ingrowth)
The "Holy Grail" of orthopaedics is an implant that the body thinks is bone. Using LAYRR Ti-6Al-4V, manufacturers can print "trabecular" lattice structures—rough, porous surfaces that mimic cancellous bone. This allows real bone to grow into the implant, locking it in place biologically rather than just mechanically.
2. Patient-Specific Matching
No two bodies are identical. Why should implants be? From cranial plates to maxillofacial reconstruction, AM allows surgeons to scan a defect and print a perfectly matching Titanium or PEEK implant in days. This reduces surgery time and improves cosmetic outcomes.
3. Mass Customization in Dentistry
Dental labs are the highest volume users of metal printing. Instead of casting crowns by hand (lost-wax method), labs now print hundreds of unique Cobalt Chrome copings on a single build plate overnight, achieving higher accuracy and lower unit costs.
Critical Materials for Medicine
We stock the "Bio-Safe" grades required for long-term implantation and transient contact.
Orthopaedics (Load Bearing)
-
Titanium Ti-6Al-4V Grade 23 (ELI): The gold standard. "ELI" stands for Extra Low Interstitial (low oxygen/iron), which maximises ductility and fracture toughness.
-
Application: Hip stems, knee joints, spinal cages, trauma plates.
-
-
Tantalum (Ta): High density and extreme biocompatibility. Known for superior osseointegration properties.
-
Application: Porous coating replacements, spinal implants.
-
Dental (Restorative)
-
Cobalt-Chromium-Molybdenum (CoCrMo): Nickel-free to prevent allergic reactions. High stiffness and excellent ceramic bonding (CTE matched).
-
Application: Crowns, bridges, removable partial dentures (RPDs).
-
-
Cobalt-Chrome-Tungsten (CoCrMoW): Enhanced thermal stability for ceramic firing cycles.
Surgical & Polymers
-
Stainless Steel 17-4 PH / 316L: High strength and sterilisable.
-
Application: Surgical guides, drills, reamers, and robot effectors.
-
-
VICTREX® PEEK: Radiolucent (invisible to X-rays), allowing doctors to monitor healing behind the implant. Modulus of elasticity similar to natural bone, reducing "stress shielding."
-
Application: Spinal spacers, cranial implants, trauma fixations.
-
The LAYRR Standard: Cleanliness
In a cleanroom environment, the powder must be as sterile as the process.
-
Contamination Control: Our medical-grade powders are handled in dedicated, isolated lines to prevent cross-contamination with non-biocompatible metals (like copper or standard steel).
-
Chemistry Validation: We verify every lot against ASTM F136 (Ti) and ASTM F75 (CoCr) standards. We specifically monitor Iron (Fe) and Oxygen (O) levels to ensure fatigue life is not compromised.
-
Capsule Packing: We offer "direct-to-machine" cartridge or bottle packaging to minimise operator exposure and powder handling in the lab.
Lab Director's Note: Ceramic Bonding For dental labs transitioning from casting to printing: Our CoCrMo powders are engineered with a specific Thermal Expansion Coefficient (CTE) range to ensure your existing porcelain supply bonds correctly without cracking during cooling. Check our datasheet for CTE curves.
