Product Intelligence

In the race to shed weight, AlSi10Mg is the starting line. It is the most widely adopted aluminium alloy in additive manufacturing because it solves the two biggest problems in printing aluminium: reflectivity and cracking.

LayrrAlum10 - AlSi10Mg is a gas-atomised powder that turns a commodity alloy into a precision instrument. While standard aluminium powders can suffer from oxidation and moisture absorption (leading to porosity), our feedstock is processed and packaged under strict inert conditions. We deliver the flowability and chemical purity required to achieve >99.5% density and consistent mechanical properties batch after batch.

Material Behavior & Microstructure

AlSi10Mg is a "near-eutectic" alloy, meaning it transitions from liquid to solid over a very narrow temperature range.

This solidification behaviour is critical for additive manufacturing:

  1. Fine Microstructure: The rapid cooling rates of laser melting (106 K/s) create a unique, ultra-fine cellular microstructure that is significantly stronger than cast aluminium.

  2. Silicon Network: The 10% Silicon content forms a eutectic network that reinforces the aluminum matrix, increasing hardness and reducing shrinkage during solidification.

  3. Magnesium Hardening: The small addition of Magnesium (Mg) allows for precipitation hardening (Mg2Si) through heat treatment, further boosting tensile strength.

Processing Advantage: The Layrr Standard

Aluminium is notoriously reactive. Our powder handling ensures your build doesn't fail before it starts.

Humidity Control: Aluminium powder is hygroscopic. Our vacuum-sealed packaging prevents hydrogen porosity caused by moisture contamination.

  • Flowability: Unlike "spongy" irregular powders, our spherical morphology ensures smooth spreading even at layer thicknesses of 30-60µm.

  • Reflectivity Management: The surface quality of our particles improves laser coupling, allowing for stable melt pools even with standard fiber lasers.

Critical Applications

From thermal management to structural brackets, AlSi10Mg is the workhorse of lightweight design:

Automotive: Powertrain components, heat exchangers, and structural nodes that require high thermal conductivity.

Aerospace: Brackets, ducting, and housings where every gram saved equals fuel efficiency.

Prototyping: The most cost-effective metal for validating geometry and fit before moving to more expensive superalloys.

Robotics: Low-inertia arms and grippers for high-speed automation.

LAYRR Technical Note: As-printed AlSi10Mg is naturally hard but has low ductility. For structural applications requiring elongation, a stress-relief anneal (e.g., 300°C for 2 hours) is standard. For maximum strength, a T6 heat treatment (Solution + Artificial Aging) can be applied, though it may result in some blister formation if gas porosity is present in the print.
